Every couple aspires to have the ‘dream’ wedding with never-seen-before decorations or entertainment. So, the first step towards this is looking outside the function hall or hotel banquet for the ideal venue. In this compilation, we showcase some of the city’s latest and best open-air wedding venues that can be transformed par excellence

SPP GARDENS, Maduravoyal
Little will one expect to find a perfect setting on the dusty outskirts of Chennai. Driving a little distance away from the ever-busy Madurayoval Bypass Road choked by pollution, is this lush, 14-acre venue. Six different landscapes are carefully stitched together, right from a lotus pond to a bamboo lawn — each outperforms the other in terms of greenery and scenic beauty. The venue houses nine rooms and a serviced apartment too. With the right decorator, SPP Gardens can be turned into a vibrant wedding venue, perfect for a joyous occasion.

NAHAR FARMLAND, Vadanemmeli
As pretty as beach weddings can be, if you’re not the kind of bride/groom not to have sand and wind ruin your hair and make-up or trousseau, just go across the road to the other side of ECR. Located a kilometre before the Shirdi Sai Baba Temple is this eight-room bungalow resting on a sprawling garden that will welcome you with open arms. It’s the ideal space for a wedding party or gathering of 60-100 members and while they do permit outdoor mandaps to be set up, there’s a catch — the venue only allows vegetarian food to be prepared or served.

THE ROYAL PALMS, Vettuvankeni
If you ever lusted after the house in which Chachi 420 was shot, and wanted to get married there, here’s some good news — you can! The century-old bungalow has opened its doors to host various events and is the ideal set-up for a wedding. While the interiors retain its old-world charm, the lawns are the brightest shade of green. So one can imagine just how pretty a pink pandal with marigold or any other floral decoration might look. A covered, air-conditioned conference hall which has a kitchen for catering also features in this property.

AVM GARDEN VILLA, Vadapalani
Constructed in 1965, this property was fondly called ‘Chettiar Bungalow’ and it was home to movie mogul AV Meiyappan, who founded the AVM Studios. During the day, the large centrally air-conditioned interior seems ideal for a vintage-themed sangeet ceremony. The wrought iron furniture in the portico definitely is a plus point. If you’re more the outdoor person, then a reception on the lawn in the evening will leave you mesmerised, as the venue comes to life with fairy lights that glow like stars against the dusky backdrop.
